Re: Infographic: How Ready Is the Enterprise to Leverage Big Data?
The survey results show a stable position for the big data but still need improvements in different areas. The small firms have fewer resources whereas large firms want to minimize their costs. I think the Big Data needs to integrate more innovative and simple systems that can bring in more success for the system.

Re: Infographic: How Ready Is the Enterprise to Leverage Big Data?
We went out to a lot of the wider community on this survey Edwin, so i think we can take a bit more faith in the results (although, just how much interest someone with no big data plans would have had in the survey remains questionable).

Re: Infographic: How Ready Is the Enterprise to Leverage Big Data?
Saul, yes there's definitely a long way to go, but I find the outcome pretty encouraging. More than 70% being confident about the value of big data is an excellent result. However the survey was done amongst the big data republic members, so we can say that 70+% of the Big Data practitioners are confident, but what about the others...? Would be interesting to see this survey done amongst people who haven't joined the Big Data discussion. Do you have any data on those?

Re: A depressing lack of focus on Innovation and Insight
Big data would make a big play this year, its the future of the computing. It a disrupting technology, it changed the way we do business-how we treat our unstructured data and unleash its potentials.

For the next couple of years we will see much more exciting thing sin the world of big data, Hadoop is taking a huge makeover, getting much more powerful. I believe Oracle could be the first company in the enterprise market to make a big powerplay move in the big data arena, they're already fired their firts shot. Oracle's experience and expertise in big data make them a good player in this ground.

Re: A depressing lack of focus on Innovation and Insight
Big Data will still continue to be strong for the enterprise market. Challenges can arise from the newer technology companies which have abilities to outpace traditional enterprise models. They are more easily adept to build upon more larger data components and more ahead understanding customers' data within its market

Re: A depressing lack of focus on Innovation and Insight
I'm with Luke here. Times are hard, and it's going to take either an expectional leader or an exceptionally good convincer to get people behind big data initiatives. It's going to cost money. Those in the firm just have to be willing to part with it and believe that they're going to get more than their money's worth as a result, but that doesn't always happen in the financial sense.

Re: Look at the last graph.
You have a point, Saul. I never thought to consider it that way. But I don't the root of why some enterprises seem unready or unable to leverage big data is that they still haven't recognized the importance and possible impact that doing so could have.

Re: A depressing lack of focus on Innovation and Insight
You are absolutely right of course @Luke. Businesses need to take care of the basics before they can take on the more complex and exciting stuff. Still, it leaves me itching to see what those pioneers in the innovative space will come up with.

Re: A depressing lack of focus on Innovation and Insight
Agree @Saul that lack of innovation is depressing, but in this triple dip recession is it a surprise? It takes a strong CIO or CMO to win the battle with finance in this climate. But for those that do manage it will be the ones that come out of the recession as market leaders. The old adage was that companies who advertise through a recession emerge as top dog. I wonder if the 2013 equivalent is that those who invest in big data will rise to the top? Fascinating infographic BTW.

A depressing lack of focus on Innovation and Insight
I find (across all verticals) the lack of attention on Innovation and Insight depressing, as it flounders down at the one quarter mark. Although I know these companies need to get their ducks in order and we are very early in the big data cycle, I get impatient thinking of all the great product developments and end user changes they could be making while instead they are busy focusing on cutting costs and driving efficiency.
